Founder & Licensed Professional Counselor
Alexandra Mayes
LPC-MHSP
About Alexandra
Alexandra Mayes believes in teaching individuals how to improve their emotional and mental wellbeing. Alex knew at a young age that she wanted to help people. While attending Tennessee State University as an undergraduate, she took a course in psychology that changed her life forever. She learned from that course how mental health impacts every area of our lives; it influences human development, perceptions, emotions, motivation, and behaviors.
Although she considers herself resilient in her own journey to improve her wellbeing, she developed an awareness that others will not have that privilege. She knew that she wanted to provide guidance, educate, and help others who needed support in their journey to improve their mental health. She has been in the mental health field for eight years and has worked with children, teens, and adults.
In 2021 she decided to open Mindful Steps PLLC. Mindful Steps is a group practice with the goal to expand access to mental health care, provide psychoeducation, and improve how people view mental health treatment. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Mental Health Service Provider Designation. She received her bachelor's degree in Psychology from Tennessee State University (TSU), and her master's degree in Counseling Psychology from TSU as well.
Alex's approach to therapy is integrative and focuses on identifying the client's strengths, identifying maladaptive behaviors, and teaching healthy coping strategies. These integrative approaches are rooted in Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Narrative Therapy.
